The completed 2.6-acre Broad Avenue Sports Complex now serves as a vibrant health destination for Binghampton and all of Shelby County, offering a 500-plus‑person multipurpose athletic field, a walking and running track, and shaded pavilions that host year‑round wellness programming for children, families, and seniors; named in honor of Memphian and Pro Football Hall of Famer Claude Humphrey, the facility provides safe spaces for organized sports, community fitness, and preventative health initiatives, strengthens neighborhood connection by bringing residents together for events and daily activity, and stands as an accessible, dignified investment in physical wellbeing and long‑term community resilience

Origins and Realization

What began as a neighborhood vision grew from conversations on Broad Avenue into a concrete commitment to health, play, and opportunity, rallied by residents, local leaders, and BRACED’s board who celebrated the project with a widely attended groundbreaking that marked the moment hope turned into action. Community voices and early supporters framed the complex not as an isolated facility but as a shared promise: a place where kids could play, families could gather, and seniors could walk and socialize—an idea made real through steady organizing, volunteer labor, and the generosity of partners and donors.

The project built on BRACED’s  history of investing in Binghampton since incorporation, translating years of educational and outreach work into a physical campus designed for broad public benefit. The finished 2.6‑acre Broad Avenue Sports Complex includes a 500‑plus‑person multipurpose athletic field, a walking and running track, and shaded pavilions for health and wellness programming—features intentionally selected to serve children, families, and seniors across Shelby County and to provide durable infrastructure for community programming.

Naming the athletic field after Memphian and Pro Football Hall of Famer Claude Humphrey made the dream feel local and generational: it connected the facility to neighborhood pride and to a legacy that shows young people what’s possible when talent and community support meet. Today the complex stands as a realized dream—an accessible, dignified place that codifies years of grassroots effort into daily opportunities for play, fitness, and community health

The Broad Avenue Sports Complex is a multipurpose athletic field, walking and running track, and shaded pavilions for health and wellness programming that together create daily opportunities for exercise, play, and social connection for children, families, and seniors; by providing safe, high‑quality green space in the heart of Binghampton.

The complex reduces barriers to regular movement, supports organized youth sports and community fitness classes that build endurance and healthy habits, and creates venues for screening events, nutrition workshops, and active aging programs that lower chronic disease risk, improve mental health, and strengthen social cohesion—turning a single site into a durable public-health investment that promotes long‑term well being across our community.
